Results of funded projects within Call GLAM 2023
ByLibraries are still today a central place for the free dissemination of knowledge. Wikimedia Italy with the call Musei archivi biblioteche 2023 wanted to make these places of culture protagonists.
Biblioteca Lazzerini and industrial culture of Prato
One of the projects that has seen the light thanks to this call is the one realised by Biblioteca Lazzerini in Prato, Tuscany. The project consists in rediscovering the industrial culture of the city through the use of Wikimedia projects. Several entries have been written on Wikipedia on the history, places and protagonists of Prato's textile production, such as those on Piero Benintendi or Piazza San Domenico. 250 historical photos were also uploaded on Wikimedia Commons. The images were collected through a campaign inviting anyone who had historical photos on Prato's textile industries to deliver them to the library by 31 July. These also include:
- a video on wool processing from the 1950s, now available on Wikimedia Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lanificio_Angiolo_Cocchi_di_Prato_(1957).webm
- the 1918 Wool Topographical Map of the municipality of Prato, contained in the historical monograph L'Arte della lana in Prato: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%27arte_della_lana_in_Prato
- a book digitized on Wikisource, now waiting to be fully transcribed: https://it.wikisource.org/wiki/Indice:L%27Arte_della_Lana_in_Prato.djvu
Civico Museo Insubrico di Storia Naturale and fossil specimens
Civico Museo Insubrico di Storia Naturale (Insubric Museum of Natural History in Clivio), houses a large collection of artefacts from the Insubric region, focusing in particular on the Monte San Giorgio site and also preserving study collections in addition to the material on display. The UNESCO site of Monte San Giorgio extends between the province of Varese and Canton Ticino in Switzerland. It is an area of particular interest for its paleontological findings, so much so that since 2003 the Swiss area has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, while the Italian area has been on this list since 2010.
The aim of the project was to create and enhance images and encyclopaedic entries that tell not only about the collections and objects in the Civico Museo Insubrico di Storia Naturale but also about the natural history of the Monte San Giorgio UNESCO site. 106 images were produced, specifically for the fossil specimens focus-stacking and imaging-composing techniques were used. With this project, the Civico Museo Insubrico tells the remote history of its territory by making the exhibits active protagonists of the narrative.
