Edit-a-thon for Librarians at the annual Library and Information Association of South Africa 2023 Conference
ByThere is very little on libraries in South Africa on Wikipedia (and even on Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons), so a group of Wikibrarians ran an edit-a-thon at the annual LIASA (Library and Information Association of South Africa) conference where attendees could add content.
The LIASA Conference theme was "Libraries - Writing the Next Chapter" so one of the ways in which libraries and librarians can write these stories, to tell the our stories is through Wikimedia and its various sister projects.
Our aim was to get each attendee to add a library to the List of Libraries in South Africa and it succeeded. This was low hanging fruit, but it meant that the 30 attendees, mostly newbies, made their first edits by adding 33 entries. Attendees were from across the library sector - school, academic, public and special libraries. Slides we used are here: File:LIASA Wikipedia Editathon 2023.pdf
We are about to have a Wiki Loves SA Libraries campaign (dates still to be finalised) but have created this Wiki Loves South African Libraries Campaign to get content added to Wikipedia, Wikidata and the Commons. The edit-a-thon was a way of getting interest in the campaign. Watch this space!
